Before You Backfill Legal Ops, Rethink the Role
The legal ops job doesn’t look like it used to. The smartest teams are pausing before they post the backfill — and redesigning the role for what’s coming, not what was.
Something has changed
It used to be simple: if your legal ops leader left, you posted for the backfill and moved on. That’s not what’s happening now.
Instead, we’re seeing teams pause and say, “Wait — let’s actually think about this one.” Not because legal ops matters less. If anything, it’s the opposite. But the job doesn’t look like it used to. Expectations for the role have ballooned, and the scope is broader than ever.
What the role covers now
That’s not really the same old job anymore. So before backfilling, a lot of teams are first asking: how do we redesign this role — and this function — for the future?
The questions worth pausing for
- What does this function need to look like three years from now — not three years ago?
- Which parts of the old job should be automated, delegated, or retired before anyone new walks in?
- Is this one hire, or has the scope grown into a function that needs a different structure?
- What mix of legal, operational, and technical fluency does the redesigned role actually require?
- How will this role drive AI adoption across the department — not just keep the lights on?
